Who they were
Elena Guerra was born in Lucca on 23 June 1835 to a family of the local nobility. After a pilgrimage to Rome with her father in 1870 she wanted to give her life to God, and founded the Oblates of the Holy Spirit, called the Sisters of St Zita, to educate young people; among the hundreds she formed was St Gemma Galgani.
Devoted to the Holy Spirit and to the Fathers of the Church, she wrote to Pope Leo XIII urging that the faithful everywhere prepare for Pentecost with a novena; in a Brief of 5 May 1895 he asked every bishop in the world to hold it. She died on 11 April 1914.
The miracles
A man in Brazil — Brazil — 2010
A man suffered a devastating head injury, with suspected brain death and complications including pneumonia and hepatitis. He survived and recovered rapidly and completely; on 1 June 2023 the Vatican's medical board found the case scientifically inexplicable.
Two miracles were approved for her beatification, the first of John XXIII's pontificate.
Why that counted as sanctity
Beatification followed on 26 April 1959 by John XXIII. The case of a man in Brazil was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 13 April 2024, opening the way to canonisation. Canonisation followed on 20 October 2024 by Francis.
