Who they were
At Thessalonica in Macedonia, in present-day Greece, the passing of Saint Elias the Younger, a monk according to the teaching of the Eastern Fathers, who, after suffering much for the faith at the hands of the Saracens, led with great fortitude of soul a severe life of austerity and prayer in Calabria and Sicily.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 17 August as a monk who suffered at the hands of the Saracens and lived in austerity in Calabria and Sicily.
