Who they were
Émilie de Rodat was born on 6 September 1787 in a château in southern France to rich, noble parents. When the Revolution broke out before she was two, she was taken to her grandmother at Villefranche-de-Rouergue.
At seventeen, on the feast of Corpus Christi 1804, she chose to become a nun. She founded at Villefranche the Sisters of the Holy Family to educate girls and care for the poor.
