Emily de Vialar
French saint (1797–1856)

Who they were
Émilie de Vialar was born at Gaillac on 12 September 1797. She gave her life to the poor, taking them into her home and organising companions in works of charity; in 1832 at Gaillac they began a new religious life devoted to every kind of misery and to teaching girls.
Dedicated to spreading the Gospel in distant lands, she founded in Marseille the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition and spread it tirelessly. She died on 24 August 1856.
