Eugendus
French saint
Feast: 1 January (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Eugendus was given at seven to Sts Romanus and Lupicinus at the monastery of Condat in the Jura, and never left it. Learned in Greek, Latin and Scripture, he lived with great austerity and out of humility refused ordination.
Abbot from about 496, he remained a humble monk, a model of penance and piety; God confirmed his holiness with miracles. He rebuilt the burnt monastery in stone and brought in a common life. He died at Condat on 1 January 510.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
A humble abbot who lived his whole life in the cloister.
