Who they were

Eugene, a Roman who had been a cleric from boyhood, known for gentleness, holiness and generosity, was elected pope on 10 August 654 while St Martin I was in exile for resisting Monothelitism.

When his legates brought back an unorthodox letter from the new Patriarch of Constantinople, clergy and people in Rome rejected it. He died at Rome on 2 June 657.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A gentle pope who held to the true faith under imperial pressure.
