Euphrasia of Constantinople

Who they were

Euphrasia, daughter of a senator of Constantinople and a relative of Emperor Theodosius, went with her widowed mother to Egypt at the age of seven, where her mother lived beside a convent. The child asked to enter it.

After her mother's death she refused a marriage arranged by the emperor, gave her whole fortune to him for the poor, and gave herself with ardour to the ascetic life. She died at about thirty.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: she has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

A noble girl who gave up wealth and marriage for a life of prayer.
