Eusebius of Samosata

Who they were

Eusebius, Bishop of Samosata, refused Emperor Constantius's order to hand over the record proving the lawful election of St Meletius; threatened with the loss of his right hand, he held out both hands.

He worked with St Gregory Nazianzen for St Basil's election, was exiled under Valens, and on his return was killed by an Arian woman who threw a tile on his head. He is honoured as a martyr.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A bishop who offered both hands rather than betray the truth.
