Who they were
Josef Kugler was born and baptised at Neuhaus, near Regensburg, on 15 January 1867, into a family of craftsmen. His father's early death sent him to Munich to learn to be a blacksmith; an accident at work put him in hospital for a long time and left him lame for life.
He joined the Hospitaller Order of St John of God as Brother Eustachius, whose question for any new head nurse was: 'Is he good to the sick, is he truly a Brother of St John of God?' He died on the afternoon of 10 June 1946.

A decree on a miracle obtained through his intercession was issued for his beatification; the biography does not describe it.
Why that counted as sanctity
A lame blacksmith who became a brother of the sick and measured everything by goodness to them.
