Everald Hanse

Who they were

Everard Hanse, from Northamptonshire, was educated at Cambridge and held a good living in the Church of England. His brother William, a priest, tried in vain to convert him, until a sharp illness made him look into himself; he went to Reims and was ordained.

His ministry was very short. Visiting Catholic prisoners in the Marshalsea in disguise, he was recognised by his foreign shoes. In court he said he would have all believe the Catholic faith as he did, was condemned for treason for these words, and executed at Tyburn on 31 July 1581.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

A convert priest condemned only for the words of his faith.
