Who they were
Manuel Míguez was born on 25 March 1831 at Xamirás, a small village in Galicia, Spain. He joined the Piarists, taking the name Faustino, and was ordained on 19 March 1856; the following year he was sent to Cuba, the youngest of the first Piarist community there.
A renowned teacher and naturalist, he founded the Daughters of the Divine Shepherdess to educate girls. He died at Getafe, near Madrid, on 8 March 1925, aged 94.

Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a young man was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 6 April 1998, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on 25 October 1998 by John Paul II. The case of a woman was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 22 December 2016, opening the way to canonisation. Canonisation followed on 15 October 2017 by Francis.
