Felix III

Who they were

Felix, of a Roman senatorial family and said to be an ancestor of St Gregory the Great, became pope in 483 during the conflict with the Eutychian heresy.

He excommunicated the heretical intruders at Antioch and Alexandria and, in 484, the Patriarch Acacius of Constantinople, refusing communion with those who would not reject heresy. He died in 492.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A pope who held firm to the faith against imperial compromise.
