Who they were
At Rheinau in present-day Switzerland, Saint Fintan, who, also of Irish origin, lived for a long time for the love of God in a monastery and, for longer still, as a recluse in a small cell beside the church.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 15 November as an Irish monk of Rheinau who lived many years as a recluse in a cell beside the church.
