Francis Libermann

Who they were

Jacob Libermann, son of the rabbi of Saverne, was raised to succeed his father. Studying at Metz, he read the Gospels in Hebrew, and after his brothers became Catholics he too was baptised.

He founded the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, later united with the Congregation of the Holy Ghost, of which he became superior general. He died in Paris on 2 February 1852 with a reputation for the highest holiness.

The miracles

The Catholic Encyclopedia records that after he was declared Venerable his cause for beatification continued; it does not describe any approved miracle.

A rabbi's son who became a founder of missionaries.
