Who they were
Francisco de Paula Victor was born in Campanha, Minas Gerais, Brazil, on 12 April 1827, the son of an enslaved woman. Against the prejudice of his time he became a priest, and for more than fifty years was parish priest of Três Pontas, where he was loved as the 'Apostle of Charity' for his care of the poor.
He died on 23 September 1905, and was the first Black Brazilian to be beatified.

A woman who had been told by doctors that a medical condition meant she could never conceive prayed for Father Victor's intercession, and went on to conceive and bear a child.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a Brazilian woman was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 5 June 2015, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on 14 November 2015.
