German physician in Moscow, known as the 'holy doctor' for his work for prisoners
Who they were
Friedrich Joseph Haass, a German doctor who settled in Moscow in 1806, spent his fortune on the poor and worked to lighten the chains and conditions of prisoners deported to Siberia. The Haass Society's own page notes his death fell on 16 August 1853 by the Julian calendar, 28 August by the Gregorian.

Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of the Mother of God at Moscow calls him a Servant of God and holds commemorations in his honour; the nihil obstat was granted on 31 March 1998, the inquiry opened at Köln in 1999 and the forum was transferred to Moscow in 2011.
