Gabriel Lalemant

Who they were

Gabriel Lalemant, born in Paris on 10 October 1610, became a Jesuit in 1630 and reached Canada in 1646. After two years at Quebec he was sent to the Huron missions as St John de Brébeuf's assistant.

Scarcely a month later the Iroquois took both priests at the mission of St Louis, led them to St Ignatius and tortured them to death at the stake. Lalemant's sufferings lasted from six in the evening until nine the next morning, 17 March 1649.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
