Who they were
Genoveffa De Troia was born in Lucera, Italy, on 21 December 1887 to a poor family. From the age of four she suffered ulcers on her body; she learned sewing and worked in service, and in 1913 her family moved to Foggia, where she spent the rest of her life.
Stricken while young by an incurable disease, she lived bedridden for some fifty years, offering her sufferings for sinners. She became a Franciscan tertiary in 1931, and from her room she counselled and consoled the afflicted and the poor, giving away the alms she received. She died on 11 December 1949.
