George Gervase
Benedictine priest and martyr
Feast: 11 April (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
At London in England, Blessed George Gervase, priest of the Order of Saint Benedict and martyr, who was a student of the English College at Douai and, although imprisoned twice in his own country under King James I while carrying out his pastoral ministry, nevertheless professed the Catholic faith steadfastly until he was hanged.
The miracles
As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 11 April as a Benedictine priest trained at Douai who was hanged in London under King James I for professing the Catholic faith.
