Who they were
Gerard, of a wealthy family of Cologne, was a model of obedience and piety and an edifying priest. In 963 he became Bishop of Toul, bearing its burdens without its comforts.
He avoided long stays at court, defended his church's rights firmly and governed his county wisely. He died at Toul on 23 April 994.
