Rastelli was a pioneering paediatric heart surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, who devised the 'Rastelli' operations and died of Hodgkin's disease at 37.

The Holy See granted permission for his cause on 30 September 2005 and the diocesan process of the Servant of God Giancarlo Rastelli was reopened in Parma cathedral in October 2023 under Bishop Enrico Solmi.
