Giles of Assisi

Who they were

Giles (Aegidius) joined St Francis in April 1209 and was clothed in a poor habit Francis begged for him; Francis called him 'the Knight of our Round Table'. He went with Francis to preach and to Rome when the first Rule was approved.

He made pilgrimages to Compostela, Jerusalem and elsewhere, always earning his food by manual work. Without learning but given to constant contemplation, he died in 1262, already revered as a saint.

Pope Pius VI confirmed the honour long paid to him.
