Who they were
Gioacchino Watanabe Jirōzaemon was a catechist, aged fifty-four, named in the Dicastery's list of the 188 martyrs of Japan, and he died in prison from his sufferings and tortures on 16 August 1609. He was beatified on 24 November 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI.
