Who they were
On Mount Olympus in Bithynia, in present-day Turkey, Saint Giorgio il Limniota, monk, who deplored the impiety of the emperor Leo III for destroying the sacred images and burning the relics of the saints, and for this, his nose cut off by the emperor's order and his head set on fire, went up to the Lord as a martyr.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 24 August as a monk martyred for opposing Leo III's destruction of sacred images.
