Who they were
Giovanni Calabria was born in Verona on 8 October 1873, the youngest of seven children of a cobbler and a devout servant woman. When his father died he left school to work as an errand boy, until a priest prepared him privately for the seminary. Ordained on 11 August 1901, he took in soldiers and cared for them spiritually.
Poverty was his teacher from birth. From 1939 until his death, against his love of hiddenness, he cried out to all that the world can be saved only by returning to Christ and his Gospel. He died on 4 December 1954.
