Giovanni Mazzucconi
19th-century Italian Catholic priest

Who they were
Giovanni Battista Mazzucconi was born at Rancio di Lecco in 1826. At a retreat at the Certosa di Pavia in 1845 he heard the prior, once a missionary in India, speak of the missions. After ordination he joined the institute that became the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions and set out with his companions for Australia.
After two years of preaching the Gospel, worn out by fever and sores, he was killed for the faith with a blow of an axe.
