Who they were
Giulia Crostarosa was born in Naples on 31 October 1696 and became a nun, taking the name Maria Celeste. At Scala, on the Amalfi coast, she founded the Order of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptoristine nuns, whose rule she wrote; St Alphonsus Liguori, who founded the Redemptorists, knew her there.
She later founded a monastery at Foggia, where she died on 14 September 1755.
The miracles
Sister Maria Celeste (Anna Maria) Lagonigro, a nun
From the age of seven or eight she suffered from chronic infection of the middle ear, with a perforated eardrum and hearing loss. She was healed immediately, completely and lastingly; on 19 February 2015 the Vatican's medical consultants unanimously found the healing scientifically inexplicable.
One more approved miracle is needed for canonisation.
Why that counted as sanctity
On 3 June 2013 the Church declared that this life showed the Christian virtues to a heroic degree, and gave the title Venerable. The case of Sister Maria Celeste (Anna Maria) Lagonigro, a nun was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 14 December 2015, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on 18 June 2016 by Cardinal Angelo Amato, for Pope Francis.
