Who they were
Giuseppe Allamano was born at Castelnuovo Don Bosco, in Piedmont, on 21 January 1851; his mother was the younger sister of St Joseph Cafasso. A priest of Turin, he saw that the Church there had no institute devoted to the missions.
He founded the Consolata Missionaries, whose first pioneers went to Kenya, and soon after the Consolata Missionary Sisters. He died in Turin on 16 February 1926.
The miracles
A lay missionary — Nyeri, Kenya
A lay missionary was healed of acute viral hepatitis with a fulminant course. The case was investigated in Nyeri, Kenya, in 1975, and the Vatican's medical board found the healing scientifically inexplicable in 1989.
A man of the Amazon forest — Roraima, Brazil
An indigenous man of the Brazilian Amazon forest was mauled by a jaguar. He not only escaped death but went back to his normal life and work in the forest with no after-effects. On 14 September 2023 the Vatican's medical board found the healing scientifically inexplicable.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a lay missionary was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 10 July 1990, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on 7 October 1990 by John Paul II. The case of a man of the Amazon forest was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 23 May 2024, opening the way to canonisation. Canonisation followed on 20 October 2024 by Francis.
