Who they were
Giuseppe Ambrosoli was born in 1923 near Como, in northern Italy. He studied medicine in Milan, interrupted by the war, qualified in 1949, then studied tropical medicine in London and joined the Comboni Missionaries. He was ordained on 17 December 1955.
The next year he went to Kalongo in northern Uganda, where he turned a simple dispensary into a hospital and founded a school of midwifery. His health, already weakened by kidney failure, gave way under the strain, and he died at Lira, Uganda, on 27 March 1987.
The miracles
A woman — Matany, Uganda — 2008
A woman developed septic shock from a putrid infection of the womb during pregnancy, with deep vein clots in the pelvis and left leg and gangrene of the lower half of the leg. Her doctor, at least, prayed to Father Ambrosoli before she began to recover, and she was healed.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a woman was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 28 November 2019, opening the way to beatification.
