martyr of the Catholic Church
The Vatican record
- 20 May 2023 — Martyrdom recognised (decree list, 2023)
Who they were
Giuseppe Beotti was born on 26 August 1912 at Campremoldo Sotto, near Piacenza, to a farming family, and was ordained on 2 April 1938. As a curate at Borgonovo he stood out for his charity to the needy and his care in forming the young.
In the war he served everyone's needs without distinction, partisans, Jews, soldiers and the wounded. He knew the risks. He was killed in 1944 at Sidolo in a German reprisal, and the help he had given to Jews persecuted by the Nazis and Fascists played a decisive part in his death.
The miracles
His martyrdom has been recognised by the Church.
Why that counted as sanctity
