Giuseppe Bernardi

Who they were

Giuseppe Bernardi was born at Caraglio, near Cuneo in Italy, on 25 November 1897 and was ordained priest on 29 June 1923. After serving as parish curate, rector of the orphanage at Cuneo and parish administrator, he became parish priest of Boves, where he was loved for his pastoral care and his feeling for the poor; Pope Francis beatified him on 16 October 2022.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

Asked by the Nazis to act as a mediator for the release of two captured Germans, he substantially carried the task through but was then held.
