Who they were
Giuditta Vannini was born in Rome on 7 July 1859. On 2 February 1892, in the room where St Camillus de Lellis had died, she and two companions received the red cross of the Camillians from the Superior General, and on 19 March she took the habit as Sister Giuseppina.
She founded the Daughters of St Camillus to care for the sick, and led them until her death in Rome on 23 February 1911.
The miracles
A sick person
A healing through her intercession was found by the Vatican's medical board on 16 March 1993 to be rapid, complete, lasting and scientifically inexplicable. The Dicastery's summary does not describe the illness.
A construction worker — Sinop, Mato Grosso, Brazil
A building worker fell 10.8 metres, and came away with none of the serious physical or mental injuries such a fall should cause. On 27 September 2018 the Vatican's medical board said that the absence of injury could not be explained scientifically.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a sick person was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 23 December 1993, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on 16 October 1994 by John Paul II. The case of a construction worker was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 13 May 2019, opening the way to canonisation. Canonisation followed on 13 October 2019 by Francis.
