Gregory II

Who they were

Gregory, a Roman, served the Church from boyhood and was papal almoner and librarian. As a deacon he went with Pope Constantine to Constantinople, where his answers settled every difficulty raised by the emperor.

Elected pope on 19 May 715, he repaired the walls of Rome and led the Church with great ability. He died in February 731 and was buried in St Peter's.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

One of the great popes of the eighth century.
