Gregory III
90th Pope of the Catholic Church

Who they were
Gregory, son of a Syrian, was so renowned for learning and virtue that the Romans acclaimed him pope at his predecessor's funeral on 11 February 731.
He protested against the emperor's destruction of holy images, held two synods condemning Iconoclasm, and paid special honour to images and relics. He died in 741 and was buried in the oratory of Our Lady he had built in St Peter's.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
