Henri Planchat

Who they were

Henri Planchat, born at Bourbon-Vendée on 8 November 1823, was the first priest of the Religious of St Vincent de Paul. He is honoured with four priests of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, among them Ladislas Radigue, Polycarpe Tuffier and Marcellin Rouchouze.

During the Paris Commune they were arrested at different times and places, held at the police barracks, then in the prisons of Mazas and La Grande Roquette. On 26 May 1871, in the 'Bloody Week', they were violently killed with rifles and blades, and their bodies mocked by the crowd.

As martyrs they were beatified without a miracle.
