Who they were
The group comprises Hernando de Tovar, Bernardo de Cisneros, Diego de Orozco, Juan del Valle, Luis de Alavés, Juan Fonte, Jerónimo de Moranta and Hernando de Santarén, together with the layman Jerónimo de Quesada, killed at Santa Catarina de Tepehuanes, Santiago Papasquiaro and San Ignacio del Zape between 16 and 20 November 1616.

Why that counted as sanctity
The Archdiocese of Durango's own site states that the Society of Jesus presented the cause of the eight Jesuits martyred in the Tepehuán rising of November 1616 to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints under the title of Fr Hernando de Santarén, the most prominent of them. The date given is the nihil obstat recorded for the cause; the diocesan sources fetched confirm the cause but not that date.
