Hildegard Burjan

Who they were
Hildegard Freund was born at Görlitz in Silesia on 30 January 1883 to a Jewish family. In 1907 she married the engineer Alexander Burjan, and they had a daughter, Elisabeth. After recovering from a grave illness, which even the doctors called a miracle, she was baptised in Berlin in 1909.
A wife and mother, she became the first Christian Social woman member of the Austrian parliament and founded the Sisters of Caritas Socialis. Drawing boundless trust in the Lord from Mass and Eucharistic adoration, she died a holy death in Vienna on 11 June 1933 after a painful illness.
