Who they were
Hugh, eldest son of the Count of Semur, showed such piety that his father gave up hope of making him a knight. He entered Cluny at fourteen, was ordained at twenty, and was unanimously elected abbot in 1049.
For sixty years he ruled Cluny with consummate wisdom, served several popes as companion and counsellor, and was loved and revered by all. He died at Cluny on 28 April 1109.
