Who they were
Humbert of Romans entered the Dominicans in 1224, taught theology and was prior at Lyons, and led the Roman and French provinces. In 1254 he was elected fifth Master General of the order.
Under him the Dominican liturgy took its lasting form. He resigned in 1263 and, in humility, refused the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, retiring to Valence, where he died.
