Ine

Who they were

Ine ruled the West Saxons for thirty-seven years from 688, a successful warrior and lawgiver whose code is among the earliest English laws. He cared greatly for religion, founding and endowing monasteries including Glastonbury.

Worn out by his long rule, he abdicated to make his peace with God and went with his wife to Rome to pray at the tomb of the Apostles, where they died.

The miracles

The Catholic Encyclopedia does not describe how he came to be honoured as a saint.

Why that counted as sanctity

A king who gave up his crown to end his days in prayer in Rome.
