Who they were
István Sándor was born at Szolnok, Hungary, on 26 October 1914, the eldest of three sons of a railway clerk, and grew up in a deeply religious home. A Salesian brother, he taught trade courses at the Clarisseum.
An educator of apprentices and young workers who proclaimed the Gospel through the pedagogy of kindness, he faced persecution courageously when the communist regime closed all Catholic works, and was put to death in 1953 without wavering.
