Iuliu Hossu
Cardinal, Romanian Greek-Catholic Bishop of Cluj-Gherla, Martyr and Blessed (1885-1970)

Who they were
Iuliu Hossu is one of seven bishops of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church, with Valeriu Traian Frenţiu, Vasile Aftenie, Ioan Suciu, Tit Liviu Chinezu, Ioan Bălan and Alexandru Rusu, who gave their lives to stay beside their people in the darkest years of the dictatorship.
On the night of 28–29 October 1948 they were taken from their homes and imprisoned at Sighet. They died between 1950 and 1970, victims, as John Paul II said, of a regime that, hostile to God, trampled on man made in God's image.
