Who they were
Jacinto Vera was born on 3 July 1813. In the difficult years after South American independence he defended religious freedom and the rights of the Church and the poor, and was forced into exile for it.
On 13 July 1878 he was named the first Bishop of Montevideo, Uruguay. He died on 6 May 1881.
The miracles
A fifteen-year-old girl — Uruguay — October 1936
A girl born in 1921 had abdominal pain for months; on 17 September 1936 she was diagnosed with acute appendicitis that turned into a pelvic abscess and sepsis, and surgery was not possible. On 8 October 1936 her father and uncle put a picture with a relic of Bishop Vera at her bedside. Within hours she began unexpectedly to improve, and her doctors found her healed the next day.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a fifteen-year-old girl was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 17 December 2022, opening the way to beatification.
