Jacques Berthieu
French Jesuit missionary (1838–1896)

Who they were
Jacques Berthieu was born and baptised at Polminhac, near Aurillac, on 27 November 1838, and was ordained at Saint-Flour on 21 May 1863. He became a Jesuit and sailed from Marseille for Madagascar.
In peace and war he worked devotedly for the Gospel; three times driven from his missions, kicked and repeatedly urged to renounce his faith, he refused, and was finally killed in hatred of the faith by a shot to the back of the head in 1896.
