James of the Marches

Who they were
Domenico Gangala was born at Monteprandone on 1 September 1393 and at 22 received the Franciscan habit from St Bernardine of Siena at Santa Maria degli Angeli. His life was one of extreme penance.
A fiery preacher whose severity was softened by mercy, he was sent to Eastern Europe, attacked usury above all and founded the Monti di Pietà against it; in 1443 Eugene IV made him apostolic nuncio to preach the crusade against the Turks.
