Jean Chavet

Who they were

Jean Chavet was a layman born at Saint-Étienne on 10 August 1922 and baptised there on 13 August; from 1939 he studied industrial chemistry at the Catholic Institute of Lyon and joined the Young Christian Students. A year later he went under the compulsory labour service to Schkopau, where he took on responsibility for the French workers and had an important spiritual role in hut 22 of the Buna works, known as the chemists' hut; he was arrested there by the Gestapo on 2 November 1944 and died at Mauthausen on 24 April 1945, aged 22. He was beatified on 13 December 2025 by Pope Leo XIV.
