Who they were
Jean-Gabriel Perboyre was born at Montgesty near Cahors on 6 January 1802, in a family that gave the Church three Vincentian missionaries and two Daughters of Charity.
A priest of the Congregation of the Mission, he went to China and adopted local ways to preach the Gospel. When persecution broke out he was held for a long time and tortured, and on 11 September 1840 at Wuchang was hung on a cross and strangled.
