Jeanne Garnier (née Chabod)
French widowed laywoman, founder of the Ladies of Calvary and pioneer of palliative care
Who they were
Widowed young and having lost both her children, she founded at Lyon on 8 December 1842 the Dames du Calvaire, an association of widows who took in the incurably ill whom the hospitals would not keep; the work led to the Maison Jeanne Garnier in Paris and to modern palliative care.
