Jeanne Le Ber
Religious recluse (1662-1714)
Who they were
Jeanne Le Ber was born in Montreal on 4 January 1662, the daughter of the merchant Jacques Le Ber and Jeanne Le Moyne. At eighteen, with her spiritual director François Séguenot, she took vows of chastity and reclusion, living apart in prayer.
On 5 August 1695 she moved into a reclusory at the chapel of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame convent, where she spent her days in prayer, embroidery, sewing and reading. She died on 4 October 1714, aged 52, after 34 years of seclusion, and is honoured as 'the Angel of Ville-Marie'. The Archdiocese of Montreal opened the diocesan tribunal in her cause on 17 May 2023 at Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel, where her remains lie.
