Who they were
Jesús Emilio Jaramillo Monsalve was born at Santo Domingo, Antioquia, Colombia, on 14 February 1916, and in 1929 entered the Yarumal Foreign Missions Institute, founded to evangelise the most abandoned parts of the country. On 11 November 1969 he was named vicar apostolic of Arauca, later its bishop.
He gave his whole life to the people of God, preaching reconciliation and Christian love. On 2 October 1989, returning from a pastoral visit, he was kidnapped by armed men, savagely tortured and murdered. He is buried in Arauca cathedral.
